The Solar Company Worth $630 Million Despite Defaulting On Loans
Last year, SunPower, the Richmond, CA residential solar power company, was late in filing its third quarter results, due November 29, 2023. According to an SEC disclosure dated December 11, SunPower’s missed deadline triggered a covenant breach and default on $300 million in outstanding debt to lenders including Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Apollo Management. Suddenly, SunPower, the once high flying rooftop solar company valued as high as $9 billion, was at the mercy of lenders who were within their rights to demand immediate payment of principal and interest.
When SunPower did release its quarterly report December 18, the news wasn’t good. Revenues were down 10% over the previous year, with fewer customers signing up, especially in California. That's in large part because hi...

The Failure of America's $1 Billion Solar Farm
The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project was proposed back in 2011, and intended on meeting Nevada's rising demand for electricity to power 75,000 homes throughout the state. While the project was funded by the US Department of Energy and completed in 2015, it faced a number of challenges in the years afterward. Free solar panels? Don't get fooled
You’ve probably seen the ads on TV and online, that you may qualify for free solar panels. One elderly Houston couple took the bait and then called KPRC 2 Investigator Amy Davis when they realized they’d been hooked, tricked into paying tens of thousands of dollars for those so-called free panels.

That's in large part because higher interest rates have driven up the cost of capital — not good when you're selling assets that require a big upfront investment that takes 20 years of solar energy collection to pay back.
After a “going concern” warning and restating three years of financials, could SunPower be the domino that triggers a solar shakeout?

The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project was proposed back in 2011, and intended on meeting Nevada's rising demand for electricity to power 75,000 homes throughout the state. While the project was funded by the US Department of Energy and completed in 2015, it faced a number of challenges in the years afterward. This was mainly because of the new form of Solar Technology it was using, which was the first of its kind in the United States.
This new technology would ultimately lead the the failure of this $1 Billion dollar facility, which went bankrupt in 2020. But even as the future of this project looked uncertain, The US Buereu of Reclamation stated that the project had resumed full operation in July of 2021, due to increased demand for electricity throughout the state. Today, the future of this project is still uncertain, but has resumed operation for the state of Nevada.
